This is where the Canal Latéral à la Garonne begins—or ends—known today as the Canal de Garonne, though it is sometimes mistakenly called the Canal du Midi.
To clarify: the Canal du Midi runs from Toulouse to Sète, while the Canal de Garonne runs from Castets-en-Dorthe to Toulouse. Together, the waterway from Bordeaux to Sète is commonly referred to as the Canal des Deux Mers (Canal of the Two Seas).
La Réole is a town founded in 977 along the banks of the Garonne River. Its history and culture are distinguished by their richness and diversity. Many monuments are classified, including the former Benedictine Priory (18th century) with its priory church (late 12th–early 13th century), the fortified Château des Quat’Sos (late 13th century), one of the oldest town halls in France (late 12th century), and remnants of the 13th–14th century city walls. La Réole also offers beautiful walks through its old town, with narrow, winding streets often rising steeply along the Garonne. The town is officially recognized as a Town of Arts and History.

Monségur is one of the most characteristic bastides, with its arcaded square, the listed market hall, narrow streets, ramparts, and at its feet, the gentle Drot River offering a refreshing retreat.
What makes the Monségur area special is its naturally rolling landscapes and rural heritage. A network of “small” roads and paths allows you to discover surprises as you explore the sixteen communes of the region:
Castelmoron-d'Albret, Cours-de-Monségur, Coutures-sur-Drot, Dieulivol, Landerrouet-sur-Ségur, Le Puy, Mesterrieux, Monségur, Neuffons, Rimons, Roquebrune, Sainte-Gemme, Saint-Ferme, Saint-Sulpice-de-Guilleragues, Saint-Vivien-de-Monségur, Taillecavat.

The abbey takes its name from the great forest, or Silva Major, that surrounded the area at the time of its founding. A key site of Romanesque heritage, La Sauve-Majeure Abbey features remarkable sculptures and capitals set in a timeless landscape.
Its carved decorations, like comic strips of the Middle Ages, tell stories populated with mythical or menacing animals, heroes, and narratives that once educated medieval worshippers — and continue to captivate us today. Its open-air site is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, as part of the Way of St. James pilgrimage routes in France.
Bordeaux is an international tourist destination, renowned for its exceptional architectural and cultural heritage, with over 400 historic monuments. After Paris, it has the largest number of classified or registered historic sites in France.
Crossed by the Garonne River and close to the Côte d’Argent, this “City of Lights” has been showcasing its blonde and golden façades, grand courtyards, monumental squares, and French-style gardens since the 18th century.
The village of Saint-Émilion, a true medieval town, lies at the heart of the famous Bordeaux vineyard region. Here, you can experience over two thousand years of history between humans and the vine.
Take your time to explore, discover, and enjoy the beauty of this historic vineyard landscape, still largely intact today. Guided village tours, walks, and wine tourism experiences await — come and discover Saint-Émilion!
